Mammalian Olfaction, Reproductive

چکیده
Although for many animals olfactive perceptions must be the most important source of information about the state of their environment, we know relatively little about this chemoreceptive sensory system. The fact that our own sense of smell is comparatively rudimentary has certainly contributed to the relative lack of attention that olfactory behaviour and physiology have received. Our smelling blindness has obstructed research in two ways. Anthro-pocentric as much biological research is, it just has not looked at this inhuman sense. On the other hand, with our reduced capabilities it is just awkward to monitor the functioning of olfactometric equipment and, remarkably, technology for once has not yet come up with much of an aid to replace our helpless nose. This book makes it transparent what an important role olfaction plays in the control of reproductive behaviour of many mammalian species. It begins with a chapter by Scalia and Winans that integrates recent advances in the tracing of central olfactory projections with the more traditional pit-ture. They draw attention to the difference between the vomeronasal and ol-factory system. It is regrettable that they did not include a schematic diagram showing the layout of the main projections they describe. That would certainly have been helpful for the non-specialist reader. Smelling depends on sniffing , that is, olfaction is linked with respiration. This receives due and commendable emphasis in Macrides' chapter, but the olfactory influences on neu-roendocrine functions indicated in the chapter's title must still be considered

Olfaction Modulates Reproductive Plasticity through Neuroendocrine Signaling in Caenorhabditis elegans
Reproductive plasticity describes the ability of organisms to adjust parameters such as volume, rate, or timing of progeny production in order to maximize successful reproduction under different environmental conditions. Reproductive plasticity in response to environmental variation has been observed in a wide range of animals; however, the mechanisms involved in translating environmental cues ...
متن کاملThe roles of RFamide-related peptides (RFRPs), mammalian gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) orthologues in female reproduction
Objective(s): To benefit from reproduction and deal with challenges in the environmental conditions, animals must adapt internal physiology to maximize the reproduction rate. Maladaptive variations in the neurochemical systems and reproductive system can lead to manifestation of several significant mammalian reprocesses, including mammalian ovarian lifespan. RFamide-related peptide (RFRP, Rfrp)...
متن کاملComparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Material...
متن کاملThe Role of Arginine-Phenylalanine-Amide-Related Peptides in Mammalian Reproduction
Until 2000 it was believed that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) was the sole regulator of hypophyseal gonadotropes. In 2000, the discovery of a gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) initiated a revolution in the field of reproductive physiology. Identification of GnIH homologues in mammals, the arginine-phenylalanine- amide (RFamide)-related peptides (RFRPs), indicated a similar function...
متن کاملRecent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight
The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...
